What is Follicle Tracking Scan
Follicular tracking also known as an Antral Follicle Count (AFC), involves monitoring the number and size of your ovarian follicles throughout your menstrual cycle. This process is done using a transvaginal ultrasound scan to assess the follicles’ development. This scan measures the number and size of ovarian follicles and assesses the thickness of the uterine lining (endometrial thickness). Follicular tracking helps in evaluating fertility and determining the optimal time for conception.
Additionally, follicular tracking is used during IVF treatment to monitor the growth and number of ovarian follicles, ensuring the best timing for procedures.

What Does a Follicle Tracking Scan Examine?
A Follicle Tracking Scan examines several key aspects of ovarian and uterine health during a menstrual cycle, primarily focusing on the development and size of ovarian follicles and the thickness of the uterine lining (endometrium). Here’s what the scan typically evaluates:
1. Number of Follicles: The scan counts the number of follicles in the ovaries. These follicles are small, fluid-filled sacs that contain immature eggs. The number of developing follicles provides insight into ovarian reserve and fertility potential.
2. Size of Follicles: The scan measures the size of the follicles. As the menstrual cycle progresses, some follicles grow larger, indicating they may release a mature egg during ovulation. Monitoring the size helps predict when ovulation is likely to occur.
3. Growth and Development of Follicles: By tracking the growth of follicles over several days, the scan helps assess the follicles’ development. This information is crucial for timing interventions such as intercourse, intrauterine insemination (IUI), or egg retrieval in IVF.
4. Endometrial Thickness: The scan also measures the thickness of the uterine lining (endometrium). A healthy, appropriately thickened endometrium is important for the implantation of a fertilized egg. This measurement helps in assessing the readiness of the uterus to support a pregnancy.
Prepare for your Scan
- Fast for 6-8 Hours: Avoid eating or drinking anything except water for 6 to 8 hours before the scan. This ensures clear images
- Wear Comfortable Clothing: Dress in loose-fitting, comfortable clothing, as you may need to expose your abdomen during the scan.
- Arrive Early: Plan to arrive a few minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork and to relax before the procedure.
