What is Fibroid Scan
A fibroid scan using ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging procedure specifically designed to detect and evaluate uterine fibroids, which are benign (non-cancerous)growths that develop in or on the uterus. Ultrasound is the most commonly used method for this purpose due to its non-invasive nature, wide availability, and absence of radiation.
The scan is performed using two primary methods: transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound. In a transabdominal ultrasound, the patient lies on their back while a water-based gel is applied to the lower abdomen. A handheld device called a transducer is then moved across the abdomen. This device emits sound waves that bounce off the uterus and fibroids, creating images that are displayed on a monitor. This method provides a broad view of the uterus and is typically used to detect larger fibroids or those near the surface of the uterus.

What Does a Fibroid Ultrasound Examine?
In a transvaginal ultrasound, the patient also lies on their back, but with their legs positioned in stirrups, similar to a pelvic exam. A slender, wand-like transducer is gently inserted into the vagina, allowing it to be closer to the uterus. This proximity provides more detailed and clearer images, especially for smaller fibroids or those located within the uterine wall or cavity.
Preparation for the scan varies depending on the method. For a transabdominal ultrasound, patients are usually advised to drink several glasses of water about an hour before the scan to ensure a full bladder, which helps lift the uterus higher into the abdomen, making it easier to obtain clear images. It’s important not to urinate until after the scan, as an empty bladder can make the uterus harder to visualize. For a transvaginal ultrasound, an empty bladder is often preferred, so patients may be asked to urinate before the procedure. Relaxation is also key during this scan, as it can help ease any mild discomfort from the insertion of the transducer.
The fibroid ultrasound scan typically takes about 15 to 30 minutes. Both methods are generally painless, though the transvaginal ultrasound may cause some mild discomfort due to the insertion of the transducer. After the scan, the images are reviewed by a radiologist, and the results are sent to the doctor, who will discuss them with the patient. Ultrasound is a safe and effective method for evaluating fibroids, providing crucial information that aids in determining the appropriate treatment plan.
