What is Endometriosis Scan
Endometriosis, sometimes called “endo,” is a common health problem in women. It gets its name from the word endometrium, the tissue that normally lines the uterus or womb. Endometriosis happens when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of your uterus and on other areas in your body where it doesn’t belong.
Most often, endometriosis is found on the:
- Ovaries
- Fallopian tubes
- Tissues that hold the uterus in place
- Outer surface of the uterus
Other sites for growths can include the vagina, cervix, vulva, bowel, bladder, or rectum. Rarely, endometriosis appears in other parts of the body, such as the lungs, brain, and skin.

Can ultrasound detect endometriosis?
Since the symptoms of endometriosis can differ widely from person to person and are shared by numerous different disorders, endometriosis can be challenging to diagnose. Receiving a diagnosis of endometriosis typically involves multiple steps and lengthy wait times for patients.
A pelvic ultrasound scan is a very useful first step to diagnosing endometriosis. It is usually the first test that a doctor will recommend after a physical examination. On an ultrasound scan to diagnose endometriosis the sonographer will look for endometrioma. This is a type of ovarian cyst that can indicate endometriosis.
A pelvic ultrasound scan for endometriosis is best performed transvaginally. This means that the sonographer will ask for your consent to insert an ultrasound probe into your vagina. If you choose not to have a transvaginal scan, the sonographer may be able to complete the scan transabdominally (by placing an ultrasound probe on the skin of your pelvic area) – but results may not be as accurate.
Prepare for your Scan
- Full Bladder: Drink at least 1.5 litres of water. This ensures clear images
- Wear Comfortable Clothing: Dress in loose-fitting, comfortable clothing, as you may need to expose your abdomen during the scan.
- Arrive Early: Plan to arrive a few minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork and to relax before the procedure.
