What is a Cervical  Scan

A cervical length scan, also known as a cervical ultrasound scan or cervical screening, is a transvaginal ultrasound that measures the length of the cervix during pregnancy .It can be performed at any time between 14 and 40 weeks, but is most useful between 17 and 21 weeks. The scan is painless and uses a transvaginal ultrasound transducer.

Cervical length should generally measure more than 25mm at 16-21 weeks. If your cervix measures less than 25mm you should discuss it with your midwife or obstetric consultant. Your Sonocare Diagnostics sonographer might recommend a further follow-up cervical length screening in 2-3 weeks. In cases where the cervix is less than 25mm your medical specialist might suggest that you use progesterone or insert a cervical suture.

How is Cervical Length Performed?

A Cervical Length scan can be performed in two ways: transabdominal and transvaginal. During a transabdominal scan, you’ll lie comfortably on an examination table with your abdomen exposed. A clear, water-based gel will be applied to your skin, and a handheld device called a transducer will be moved over your lower abdomen to capture images of your pelvic organs. For a transvaginal scan, you’ll lie on your back with your feet in stirrups. A small, lubricated transducer will be gently inserted into your vagina to obtain more detailed images of your reproductive organs. Both procedures are generally well-tolerated and take about 15-30 minutes, depending on the specific indications for the scan. Ultrasound?

How to Prepare for Cervical Length Ultrasound

Preparation for a cervical legnth ultrasound scan may vary depending on the specific type of scan being performed. For a transabdominal scan, you may be asked to drink several glasses of water before the examination to ensure that your bladder is full, which can help provide clearer images of the pelvic organs. For a transvaginal scan, you may be asked to empty your bladder before the procedure to ensure optimal comfort during the examination. In both cases, wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the pelvic area. Inform your radiologist of any relevant medical history, current medications, or allergies, as this may impact the interpretation of the results. If you have any concerns or questions about the procedure, don’t hesitate to discuss them with your radiologist before the scan.
