The anomaly scan, also known as the mid-pregnancy scan or 20-week scan, is a detailed ultrasound examination typically performed between 18 and 21 weeks of pregnancy. It’s designed to thoroughly check your baby’s development and screen for any potential structural abnormalities.
The Anomaly scan serves multiple important purposes: it assesses foetal development to ensure your baby is growing as expected for their gestational age, screens for structural abnormalities to detect any congenital conditions affecting the baby’s organs and structures, checks the placenta’s position to aid in delivery planning, measures amniotic fluid levels which are essential for your baby’s development and movement, and confirms pregnancy dating to verify or adjust your due date if necessary.

Prepare for your Scan
- Please drink 0.5 litres of water approximately 1 hour before your appointment.
- Do not empty your bladder before the scan
- Wear loose fitting clothes
- We allow a maximum of two people in the room
- Scan typically taks 30-60 minutes
In most cases, the anomaly scan provides reassurance that your baby is developing normally. However, if any concerns are identified, your healthcare provider will discuss the findings with you and may recommend further tests or specialist consultations.
